OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Highland. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Phoenix about 15 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is improving.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in The Heights for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- The safety scene is decent
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much reasonable but now it's underrated.
