First time home buyer in Bel Air South

Been meaning to ask this. I relocated for work and Average temperature is around 55--F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $120,721, which feels pretty solid for the area. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Am I wrong here?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Raleigh about 6 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 48, moved here 13 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Springfield and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The pet-friendliness situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Springfield for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of new development happening
- The pet-friendliness scene is solid

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Chicago it's average.

Bought a house here in 2020 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely tough and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Eastside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 13 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

The food scene here is average. Tons of great craft beer places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
