Been living here since 2010. Crime rate is something to consider -Belfast sits at 44.6 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $986 for rent here. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Would love some local perspective.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is food scene. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Phoenix about 14 years ago. The main reasons were school and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a data analyst, 49, moved here 2 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Greenfield and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The food scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a accountant who relocated here from Portland about 2 years ago. The main reasons were school and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good airport with direct flights
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2022 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in West for 14 years. Moved from San Diego for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is average - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. West schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And dating scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 6/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
