I've been in The Heights for 8 years. Moved from LA for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is average - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Summers can be brutally hot. And nightlife can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from New York about 4 years ago. The main reasons were family and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely challenging and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Downtown) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.
