Best kept secrets of Belle Plaine, IA

I'm a nurse at the local hospital and You can expect to pay around $796 for rent here. The median home value here is around $111,600, which is actually reasonable. Crime rate is something to consider -Belle Plaine sits at 199.1 per 100K. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Diverse community
- Walkable downtown

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited dining options
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Not enough green space
What do you all think? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want school system, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Hope this helps!.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 33, moved here 15 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Riverside and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Good healthcare facilities
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Property taxes are high
3. The outdoor recreation situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for young professionals. solid vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Uptown area are excellent. Kids love it here.
