I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Crime rate is something to consider -Belleville sits at 554.6 per 100K. Poverty rate is 8.9%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Would love some local perspective. The suburbs are where most families end up.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is decent in most areas.

The food scene here is surprisingly good. Tons of great BBQ places. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
