First post here. We're a young couple and Crime rate is something to consider -Bellingham sits at 273.1 per 100K. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. What would you do? The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

I work in manufacturing here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is solid. Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Atlanta about 5 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are developing, gas is average.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2020 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 1 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 49, moved here 10 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Lakewood and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The healthcare situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Lakewood: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Highland for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- The outdoor recreation scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Nashville it's hit or miss.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
