Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. It's a a small town city with about 1,586 people. Median household income is $55,750, which feels about average for the area. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Am I overthinking this?

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. public transit used to be much pricey but now it's excellent.

Bought a house here in 2021 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I work in government here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is improving. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Tampa about 1 years ago. The main reasons were weather and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
