The good and bad of living in Bemidji

You can expect to pay around $1,004 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Bemidji sits at 533.8 per 100K. Median household income is $53,850, which feels on the lower side for the area. Household incomes average around $53,850 in Bemidji. It's a a small town city with about 15,490 people. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Growing food scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Walkable downtown
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
- Poor road conditions
Am I overthinking this? Cheers. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. As someone who grew up here, I genuinely enjoy living here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much stable but now it's challenging.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Riverside area are average. Kids love it here.

I'm a nurse and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is hit or miss and there's always something going on.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to New York it's decent.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

I've lived in Riverside for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The nightlife scene is tough

The downsides:
- Limited entertainment options
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 38, moved here 15 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Downtown and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Property taxes are high
3. The housing market situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
