First post here. My family moved here when I was a kid. You can expect to pay around $981 for rent here. Poverty rate is 4.8%, which is pretty low. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Am I wrong here? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I've lived in Riverside for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong job market in several industries
- The outdoor recreation scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Rising rent and home prices
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are developing, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely solid and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
