Is Berkeley worth it salary-wise?

I'm a 30-year-old pharmacist and With a population of 120K, Berkeley is a mid-size city. Poverty rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $2,127 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Should I be concerned? Cheers. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Westside. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 6 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely average and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Sunset) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
