Most overrated things about Berkeley

Random thought, The unemployment rate is 3.7%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. The city has invested a lot in new development. Am I overthinking this?

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 13 years ago. The main reasons were work and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is tough.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely solid and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
