What I wish I knew before living in Berkeley

Hey folks, Been living here since 2020. Homes are going for about $1,351,100 on average. The unemployment rate is 3.7%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Nice parks and trails
- Diverse community
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Sprawl everywhere
- Not enough green space
Any advice would be great. Thanks! The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I've lived in Eastside for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Close to major attractions
- The weather scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Good luck with whatever you decide..
