Came here for my partner's job and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community vibe is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (South) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
- The outdoor recreation scene is underrated

The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much pricey but now it's improving.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 8 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 44, moved here 4 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in East and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Limited shopping options
3. The pet-friendliness situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Highland for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The traffic scene is improving

The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Happy to answer more specific questions..
