Anyone else feel this way? I'm originally from Austin and Crime rate is something to consider -Bethalto sits at 107.9 per 100K. The median home value here is around $158,600, which is actually reasonable. Median household income is $66,469, which feels about average for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in West. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Italian.

I've lived in South for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- The outdoor recreation scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options
