Pros and cons of Big Lake after 13 years
First post here. I've been here for 2 years and Rent is about $1,417/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 40--F, so bundle up in winter. With a population of 12,115, Big Lake is a small town. Poverty rate is 4.1%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $113,333, which feels pretty solid for the area. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.
Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Close to nature
- Low taxes
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Far from major airports
- Homelessness issues downtown
Am I overthinking this? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.
