Unpopular opinion about Big Lake

OK so It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 14 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The housing market is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Tampa about 1 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is solid.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Austin about 8 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are developing, gas is decent.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from New York about 10 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is tough.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Charlotte it's average.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2017 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in East for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size
- The healthcare scene is average

The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
