Worst things about Birmingham nobody talks about

Hey folks, Just moved here 10 months ago and Homes are going for about $712,700 on average. The unemployment rate is 2.8%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Birmingham sits at 46.6 per 100K. With a population of 21,612, Birmingham is a small town. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Springfield) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
