Been meaning to ask this. I'm retired and Crime rate is something to consider -Bloomington sits at 353.9 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Thanks for reading. The weather takes some getting used to.

The food scene here is improving. Tons of great Vietnamese places. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (The Heights) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The healthcare scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 2 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The food scene is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..
