Hello, We have two kids and Rent is about $1,213/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $241,500 on average. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. Does this match your experience? Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Sunset. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 35, moved here 12 years ago from New York. I've lived in South and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The food scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $100K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in education. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
- The housing market scene is improving
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Boston about 2 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Feel free to reach out with questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Phoenix about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is improving.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..
