Anyone else feel this way? You can expect to pay around $861 for rent here. Should I be concerned?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Atlanta about 5 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. No regrets on my end..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it exceeded my expectations. Internet is decent in most areas.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Tampa it's improving.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in West. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in real estate. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Hope this helps!.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Eastside for 6 years. Moved from Minneapolis for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I genuinely enjoy living here. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Eastside schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 7/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Austin about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is decent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for school and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The public transit is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.
