I'm originally from Seattle and The median home value here is around $442,000, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $442,000 on average. Rent is about $2,240/month for a decent place. Median household income is $141,831, which feels pretty solid for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.
Pros:
- Friendly people
- Low crime in most areas
- Good schools
- Walkable downtown
Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Rising rent prices
- Sprawl everywhere
- Boring for young people
- Homelessness issues downtown
Am I wrong here? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Maple Ridge area are average. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely challenging and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in education. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in South for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The healthcare scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- The weather scene is decent
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 29, moved here 11 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Sunset and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The walkability situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for families. improving vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
