Anyone else feel this way? It's a a smaller city city with about 55,042 people. Rent is about $1,611/month for a decent place. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 13 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the Oak Park side, now on the Downtown side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Definitely worth checking out..
