Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Phoenix about 6 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is tough.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. the quality of life is solid. Internet is better than expected in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely tough and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (North) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Springfield. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely excellent and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Old Town) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
