Random thought, I grew up here but left for a while. Poverty rate is 4.9%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Brighton sits at 839.1 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Am I overthinking this? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

I'm a nurse and I've found the quality of life is solid. The community is excellent and there's always something going on.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The public transit is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
No regrets on my end..

I've lived in West for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of new development happening
- The outdoor recreation scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 37, moved here 12 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Oak Park and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The housing market situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for couples. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The nightlife situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.

Coming from Portland, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$130K here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely tough and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Downtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.
