I'm a remote worker and You can expect to pay around $1,698 for rent here. It's a a small town city with about 10,044 people. Rent is about $1,698/month for a decent place. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Came here for school and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The healthcare is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in education. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Italian.
