Freelancing from Brookline -experience?

Alright, I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. Crime rate is something to consider -Brookline sits at 96.7 per 100K. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. What are your go-to spots? Thanks for reading. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (North) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 15 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The housing market is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Raleigh about 2 years ago. The main reasons were school and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong job market in several industries

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Used to live on the Highland side, now on the Sunset side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 31, moved here 6 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Eastside and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The walkability situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for couples. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $50K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Denver it's decent.
