Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 13 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The nightlife is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 58, moved here 1 years ago from New York. I've lived in South and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The food scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $60K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 11 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into running, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
