It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Came here for retirement and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The housing market is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 7 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Highland for 10 years. Moved from Minneapolis for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is improving - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Not very walkable outside downtown. And safety can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 9/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great farm-to-table places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
