Moving to Buffalo — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Buffalo, NY and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a small city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $800-1200 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime as bad as the stats suggest?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

I work in retail and finding a job wasn't hard. Took about 4 months.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is the west side tends to be more affordable. Makes a big difference.

If you can afford it, Pine Grove is the best place to live. Period.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 8 years and my experience is very similar.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.
