Rent vs buy in Buffalo — what makes sense?

I'm originally from Raleigh and Homes are going for about $152,300 on average. Poverty rate is 22.3%, which is higher than I expected. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The weather takes some getting used to. Worth the trade-offs? Thanks in advance! Property taxes are high but you get good services.

I've lived in Eastside for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- The cost of living scene is solid

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Fairview) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
