Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The safety is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 36, moved here 5 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Riverside and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The outdoor recreation situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for young professionals. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Old Town. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in construction. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much stable but now it's solid.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
