So, I'm single, late 50s, and Poverty rate is 1.5%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $615,400 on average. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 3.8%, which is pretty low. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Any help is appreciated. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely solid and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Fairview) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 12 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the Maple Ridge side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I've lived in Uptown for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community
- The nightlife scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I work in finance here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is excellent. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if healthcare matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
