First post here. I'm a teacher here and The unemployment rate is 2.4%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 4 years ago. The main reasons were weather and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is improving.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 8 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to San Diego it's surprisingly good.

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The walkability is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value traffic, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Uptown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
