What I wish I knew before living in Byram

First post here. Rent is about $1,318/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 66--F, so the weather is moderate. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Thoughts?

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Atlanta it's tough.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (South) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 2 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..
