Been meaning to ask this. The unemployment rate is 1.8%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 61--F, so the weather is moderate. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Does this match your experience? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Midtown area are improving. Kids love it here.

Used to live on the West side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Chicago about 13 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is average.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a project manager, 39, moved here 7 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Greenfield and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The job market situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Charlotte it's excellent.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely excellent and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Riverside) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 4 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
