So, Median household income is $49,500, which feels on the lower side for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Springfield. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in finance. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Indian.
No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 10 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Oak Park area are average. Kids love it here.

Used to live on the North side, now on the Fairview side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I work in manufacturing here and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The job market for my field is solid. Hope this helps!.
