Affordable areas near Calumet City?

Hey folks, Homes are going for about $133,600 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Calumet City sits at 514.8 per 100K. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Used to live on the Fairview side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 39, moved here 1 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Midtown and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The pet-friendliness situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for singles. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $60K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is walkability. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Affordable housing options
- The weather scene is decent

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in consulting. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely average and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Downtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
