Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $1,550,000 on average. Average temperature is around 60--F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $147,128, which feels pretty solid for the area. Poverty rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 6 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 7 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is improving.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely pretty good and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (South) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
