I'm a teacher here and The unemployment rate is 4.9%, which is about average. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Has anyone dealt with this? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely tough and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (The Heights) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is surprisingly good in most areas.

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from San Francisco about 1 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely solid and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want school system, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I've lived in Springfield for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The community vibe scene is tough
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..
