I've lived in Oak Park for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good airport with direct flights
- The pet-friendliness scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Worth doing your research before committing.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Sunset) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Background: I'm a contractor, 57, moved here 2 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Riverside and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

1. Nightlife is limited
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The outdoor recreation situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

Pros I've experienced:

- Lots of family-friendly activities

- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is excellent.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Affordable housing options
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are affordable, gas is excellent.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
