You can expect to pay around $1,503 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Carlstadt sits at 129.7 per 100K. Rent is about $1,503/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Riverside. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
