I grew up here but left for a while. Rent is about $1,607/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $134,602 in Carmel. With a population of 101K, Carmel is a mid-size city. The median home value here is around $455,500, which is pretty steep. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Came here for weather and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The safety is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- The public transit scene is average
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Good luck with whatever you decide..
