Came here for a fresh start and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The cost of living is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 46, moved here 11 years ago from Austin. I've lived in South and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited shopping options
3. The weather situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $50K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Minneapolis about 5 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Diverse dining options
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Rising rent and home prices

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The dating scene scene is decent

The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

- Good schools in most areas
- The traffic scene is solid

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I have mixed feelings honestly. Internet is excellent in most areas.
