Alright, Military spouse here. It's a a mid-size city city with about 139K people. With a population of 139K, Carolina zona urbana is a mid-size city. The weather takes some getting used to. Anyone in a similar situation? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Tampa about 3 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is excellent.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

I've been in Oak Park for 5 years. Moved from San Francisco for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is average - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are hit or miss. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Bugs and humidity in summer. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
