Random thought, Born and raised here. It's a a mid-size city city with about 139K people. The median home value here is around $153,300, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 6.3%, which is concerning. Average temperature is around 80°F, so it's warm year-round. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. The weather takes some getting used to. I've been here 6 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Background: I'm a software engineer, 47, moved here 5 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Can feel isolated
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$130K here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in government. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like seafood.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. outdoor recreation used to be much affordable but now it's pretty good.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 3 years ago. The main reasons were school and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Eastside for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- The school system scene is decent
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
