I grew up here but left for a while. Rent is about $1,420/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 4.7%, which is about average. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Does this match your experience? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Raleigh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong job market in several industries
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in East. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in tech. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely challenging and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 8 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want community vibe, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Riverside. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in education. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Nashville it's excellent.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is tough.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor recreation is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
