Hey folks, We have two kids and Median household income is $65,469, which feels about average for the area. The weather takes some getting used to. What do you all think? Thanks! It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Nashville it's surprisingly good.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 4 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 51, moved here 7 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in West and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Can feel isolated
3. The pet-friendliness situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for remote workers. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Nashville about 10 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've been here 11 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (South) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
