Best kept secrets of Carterville, IL

Born and raised here. You can expect to pay around $856 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Carterville sits at 35.0 per 100K. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What would you do? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 1 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely solid and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Highland) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
