OK so My partner and I are It's a a small town city with about 1,524 people. Rent is about $1,148/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Thoughts?

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Meadowbrook. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in government. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Uptown. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 3 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much wild but now it's hit or miss.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from New York about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is decent.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Westside) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
